Adjustments.

29 Apr

Things I’m adjusting to at the moment.

1)   First let me say, I love the small town that we just moved to.  It’s pretty cool—I haven’t lived in a small town since I lived in Tennessee and this one is WAY smaller than any place I have ever lived.  I’m used to bigger towns or even a city, so it’s definitely an adjustment.  With all that said, I really do love our new home … but here are some of the adjustments:

a)    Did you know that in this small town that our mail peeps are not REQUIRED to pick up mail if they don’t have any mail for us?  Even if the flag is up – they won’t pick it up … I bet they won’t even turn their heads to see if a flag is up. Honestly folks.  That’s pretty lame.  Preposterous! — Ding ding! I used it again!

b)   We have a basement.  Never had a basement.  I HATE BASEMENTS (People Under the Stairs anyone????)—but I love our house.  When we moved in we asked if the basement ever gets moist or wet from rains.  The people we bought it from said NO, never had an issue.  However, since we moved in February, every time it rains our basement is as damp as a lakeshore with a big ole puddle that comes with any kind of rain. That blows. Not sure what we can do about it if anything.  I hate basements.

c)    NOBODY has fresh seafood in this town.  That blows.

d)   Bible-belt Land.  ‘Nuff said. (No offense… just takes some getting used to all over again)  Amen.

e)    Since I live on one of the main arteries through my town, I get to hear a lot of the traffic that rolls through. I can officially say that I can’t stand people who take the muffler off their car to make it sound louder.  (It is the muffler right?  WHATEVER it is- I hate it when peeps do that)   I’ve thought it was redneck-douchy in high school, and it is most definitely douchy now.  What the WORST is when those guys who have teeny neon colored sports cars/coups/sedans that have a tacky huge spoiler on the back and it’s some kind of 4 cyl engine and it sounds like this—reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Euuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuummmm  eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee !!  9 outta 10 times it’s someone with a matted mullet too. If you’re gonna have a mullet, keep it brushed for Pete’s sake. (See? You agree. I know you do.  Total douchebag)

f)     Why doesn’t Sam’s Club carry Diet Sundrop?  High annoyance with this one.  It went national people.  Get with the program.

g)    ALSO, why doesn’t Kroger carry ANY kind of Sugar Free Kool-Aid.  I can’t find it at the Wal Mart either.  WTF?

All I want is Sugar Free Cherry Kool Aid.

I believe. One of many incidents.

23 Apr

One topic that always seems to come up in discussion with me is ghosts and paranormal activity. Do you believe? Some feel as if you can’t believe in God and believe in ghosts/spirit energy at the same time. Some say it’s wrong, sacrilegious and preposterous. (I’ve ALWAYS wanted to use the word preposterous in a serious tone! Did I pull it off? YAY!) I don’t agree. To each, his own.

I’ve always considered myself to be a bit of a “sensitive” when it comes to paranormal activity. As my BFF will tell you, weird crap happens to me, I predict weird things on crazy gut feelings, and have dreams that would make any non-believer change his/her mind. I wanted to share my experiences on here though none of these posts will be in chronological order.

I’ll begin these series of posts with my most favorite experience. We’ll start with the day of my grandmother’s funeral.

My grandmother (Mom’s mom) was the coolest cat around. We called her Gran. She was blind for most of her life but could play the piano like a professional. She could tell stories FOREVER and never get tired of talking. She could also whistle. She could whistle ANYTHING. A lot of times, people at her church would ask her to perform her whistling talent in front of the congregation. She’d whistle all kinds of hymns and sweet songs. That’s my grandmother.

As a side note (I’m not sure if my Mom and Dad remember this memory but I do. I remember it like it was yesterday), Gran absolutely NEVER said anything negative about anyone. Instead of writing letters, she used to have a tape recorder and tell us stories or even whistle! Then she’d mail it to us. At the time, I was too young to really appreciate what a gift that is. (I think my parents still have those tapes. How AWESOME it would be to still be able to hear her voice!) Anyways, my dad is one funny guy and is ALWAYS thinking of ways to make people laugh. One Christmas, my dad got a violin. (He doesn’t play.) He decided to “treat” my grandmother to his musical gift. He recorded himself playing the violin for a whole hour. (A WHOLE hour folks …… again, my dad can’t play the violin!!!) The worst thing that she would say after enduring my father’s HIDEOUS screeching “music,” was “well that was really nice.” My grandmother had a sense of humor along with unlimited patience. She absolutely ADORED and LOVED my mom and dad. I love that memory.

When Gran passed away in 1995, I sat with my family on the pew at the church for her funeral. I held my mother’s hand throughout the service. It was beautiful – my grandmother was an awesome lady. My mom has always said I remind her of her.

At the end of the service we sang a hymn and after we finished, we quietly mustered about getting ready to leave. During this time it was pretty quiet and you could hear sobbing and tears being shed. In that moment I heard my grandmother whistling. It was as loud as it would have been had she been performing in front of the congregation except it was coming from the back of the sanctuary. She whistled the last little bit of her favorite hymn, “When We All Get To Heaven.” It completely floored me. I looked around as the whistling continued. At first I thought it was tacky that someone would whistle. As I looked around, I could see no one whistling though I could hear it as loud as can be—and it sounded JUST like my grandmother. No one else seemed to hear it – I was the only one who had heard it. It was as if my grandmother was doing one last final performance for her church before moving on.

I told my BFF about this incident when we got home, but I told no one else until years later. I actually just recently told my mother this last year. I was afraid had I told her about it at the time that she wouldn’t believe me, or take me seriously. She was missing her mom and I didn’t want her thinking it was just me being emotional or fake. It was true. I heard my grandmother that day.

People can believe what they want about spirits, universal energy, ghosts and paranormal activity. As for me? I am a believer.

Miss you Gran.

Still alive.

We’re going for a new record folks!

Hello. I’m a plant serial killer.

19 Apr

I’m a recovering plant serial killer. I have killed many plants. Some were such a pain to keep alive I was happy with their demise.

To make amends with Mother Earth, I have adopted two bucket children.

So far, these girls have been alive and well for a whole month.

We’ll see how long they will last…

By the power of Grayskull!!!

13 Apr

So, ever since I found out that I had 10 toes and 10 fingers brewing inside my belly last year, I started thinking about a million things.  Ok, a million and one.

One of those things we started thinking about (besides immunizations, food the bay-bay will eat, public school/home school, what she’ll look like, when will she say “Mama,” … you get the point)—I should say one of the lighthearted things we started thinking about–  is what kind of TV we would let her watch. Most likely some people will voice their opinion proudly to me that “TV is the devil and my child will not watch TV.”  That’s fine, no need to voice it, peeps.  For my family, I hope to have balance. However, I come from a generation in which we lived our adventures through talking bears who expressed their feelings, man-size turtles who were skilled ninjas with a rat as their loyal sensei, more bears who drank magic potion and bounced to save the day, and a pair of twins who suffered from some sort of identity crisis. I love tv- and I agree with some who believe too much is not good.  But that’s true for anything … especially regarding my dirty obsession with Krispy Kreme Honeybuns—but that’s a whole other post all together. So don’t worry all you folks who want to lecture me on why I shouldn’t let my kiddo watch TV – it’s all good in the hood. When that moderation comes around, I’m gonna make sure it’s quality shnizz and truly outrageous!

This past year I discovered Amazon.com (yes I’m late to the game).  It’s amazing.. I can order things (even diapers! Wipes! Paper towels!) and it comes to my door! LOOOOOVE IT.  With this new discovery it’s SOOO easy to look up OLD SCHOOL cartoons and order  volumes and volumes for your little one.  I swear the Amazon.com app on my Iphone is the MOST dangerous thing since SunDrop was created as Golden Cola back in the day.  If you are reading this post and do not know what Sun Drop is:  Google it.  Try it.  Drop it likes it’s hot.  Then come back to madtimemama.com and  talk about how inferior other soft drinks are to it.

Back to the topic at hand. I started compiling a list of the old school cartoons and even old school movies that I grew up watching and that I want my baby to know (and love!).  I have found the best prices for the movies I have on my list mostly  on Amazon.com.  However, today at Target I bought TWO VOLUMES of He-Man for $5 each.  Yes, $5!  God, I love Target.

Anyways, here’s my list of tv show volumes/movies that I am presently collecting for the bay-bay:

Gummi Bears

He-Man

She-Ra

JEM

GI Joe

Fraggle Rock

Duck Tales

The Care Bears Movie

Watcher in the Woods

Flight of the Navigator

The Child of Glass

The Hobbit (the cartoon)

Scooby Doo cartoon (the original — none of this new crap)

The Boy Who Could Fly

This list can and will continue to grow …. The bay-bay will have the ULTIMATE collection of quality tv entertainment.

New town, new season, new baby, and lots of tv.

10 Apr

I have a typical tale to tell. We recently moved to a new town, it’s spring time FINALLY,  I’m a new stay at home mom and it’s a new way of life.  I LOVE being a stay at home mom.  I’m not gonna lie.  It’s SO fun.  I had to bow out of work in my 8th month of pregnancy.  That last month ½ was INCREDIBLE.  NO WORK…Sleeping in… watching my programs on the tele, spending time with absolutely THE BEST husband, pedicures, shopping,  take naps with the pups….. then the baby came. Change but in the best way! I’m very lucky to be able to stay at home with my little one and watch ALL of the ways she changes every day.  Mostly, I’m really thankful that I don’t have to have anyone else watch her right now.  I think I would be a basket case if I had to leave her with ANYONE other than maybe my Mom or MIL/FIL.  No one is worthy to be in her presence as much as me or my husband.  She’s so fantastic. AND she is so smart. Seriously, I know parents are bias… but OMG, she is the smartest baby on the planet.

With this new lifestyle, I’m having to find a new “groove” in my day to day living.  I have ALWAYS held down a steady, good paying job.  The fact that I don’t have a “job” to drive to and execute every day is a different kind of living for me.  I’ve been trying to treat my new lifestyle/role as my job (because it IS a job—the best job).  I’m tackling lots of cooking, learning how to clean (sorry mom, it never took as a youngin’) and keep my child entertained.

In the midst of all my daily chores, I record A LOT of tv. Ever since I was introduced to the DVR, I have recorded and kept up with an impressive list of shows.  I have been saying FOR YEARS that I would be an excellent tv program critic.  I love my programs and I love a good story—especially when I am taken on an emotional rollercoaster ride.  I love even more awesome talent acting and Here are the shows I am currently watching/evaluating at the moment:

Some may say I waste a lot of time on these shows, or some may say “you have a 6 mos old child, how can you spend your time watching all of those shows?”  Easy.  I’m a multi-tasker and I LOVE TV series—it’s like one big extra long movie.  Love it or hate it, it’s what I do.

Binky catastrophe in the nursery- gotta go!
